Grades 6-12 Literacy in the Content Area (8:30-3:00 p.m.)

“Literacy lies at the heart of student understanding and achievement. Yet too many educators mistakenly assume that the reading, writing, and speaking skills that students developed in elementary school are sufficient for the sophisticated learning tasks they face in middle and high school. The result? Disappointing test scores, high dropout rates, and students unprepared for higher education, citizenship and the world of work.”

--Taking Action on Adolescent Literacy (by Irvin, Meltzer & Dukes)

This PD session is for any teacher or administrator who is interested in looking at the bigger picture of real student learning and how to get at students' cognitive processes in order to better plan instruction and assessment.

Join NwOESC's own Josh Clark, former High School ELA Teacher, Principal and current Educational Consultant, and Kris Dobbelaere, Director of Curriculum, for an engaging, interactive day of digging into Literacy across disciplines in Grades 6-12.

Participants will:

  • Examine their own thoughts surrounding Literacy (in any content area!)
  • Thoughtfully reflect on modeled strategies (in any content area!)
  • Engage in a high-level activity that you can do in your classroom tomorrow - in any content area
  • Share strategies that develop literacy skills for any content area and grade level (6-12)

We hope you will join us!

  • Lunch will be on your own. Vending machines are available on-site for light snacks and beverages.
  • Should you need to cancel your registration for this event, please contact Ashleigh Repp at arepp@nwoesc.org
