WHAT IS LETRS: Nationally recognized literacy educator and author, Dr. Louisa Moats, has partnered with the State of Ohio to support Early Literacy training and share her LETRS modules. Dr. Moats specializes in the implementation of school-wide interventions to improve literacy. She is the authority on how children learn to read and why some fail to learn. Her landmark professional development program called LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is based on research and not on any specific curriculum. It supports teachers as they diagnose the root causes of literacy struggles.
Module 1 introduces participants to the five essential components of literacy instruction and student processing systems for reading. Common reading difficulties will also be explored.
Module 2 presents the importance of phonemic awareness and how to address it in the classroom. Other topics include assessments of phonological skills and response to intervention, diagnosis and treatment. PRESENTERS: Mid-Ohio ESC Literacy Coordinators Carrie Wood and Tricia Kehl
