After School Enrichment Program Mason Intermediate – Session II

All classes will be held at your child’s school directly at the end of the school day ending at 5:00 p.m. unless noted below. 

No class will be held when school is not in session.

Dodgeball with Jim Eckert, MIS Employee

Join your fellow students in the very active sport of Dodgeball! Each week we will be playing various popular forms of the game.

Hand Sewing with Pilvi Ketola Mason Resident/Parent

Welcome to the fun hand sewing class where you will be learning an art that will be used forever!  We will be learning different types of stitches using a variety of fabrics such as felt, waffle fabric and fleece.  A variety of projects will be completed each week which could include pin cushions, purses, placemats, hats and so much more!

Detective Club with Jennifer Benson Mason Resident/Parent

Ever wanted to learn about secret codes or finger printing?  Want to discover clues and solve a mystery?  We will learn about the skills used in being a secret agent such as collecting finger prints, decoding hidden messages, solving problems and comparing all the clues to the suspects.  The last day you will be given a mystery where you have to use all your skills to find out who did it!

Arts & Crafts from Around the World with Arpita Basa Mason Resident/Parent

Celebrate countries from around the world!  We will introduce children to celebrations through different art projects including:  painting, animal designs, greeting cards, paper crafts and much more.

Young Rembrandts Cartooning with Young Rembrandts

Learn the art of cartooning!  All students are welcome from beginners to the more advanced.

Computer Gaming with Michael Michalak, MI Certified Teacher

Do you want the opportunity to learn more about the fun and educational games there are on the Internet?  You will be given the opportunity to share your favorite games with other students and play them together.  Ready? Set? Let's learn and play!

Distance Running with Renee Eves, Parent

Learn the proper way to warm up, stretch and hydrate for an everyday run or race!  This class will go over dynamic stretching, which coordinates muscles, ligaments and joints, preparing them for your run.  Learn proper posture and static stretching to help eliminate fatigue and muscle soreness. 

Fun in the Kitchen with Amy Bruns, Mason Resident/Parent

Come enjoy a new cooking experience each week with your fellow classmates.  Please be advised we will be using products that could contain allergens.  Contact Kim Dunnigan for more details.

Karate with Master K. Kim

Students will practice basic Tae Kwon Do skills while improving their focus and respect.  All participating students and their familes are invited to a Wold Class Kids graduation celebration at the facility.  Details will be sent home with students.

Kiln Fired Clay Whistles with Norma Seto, YMCA Instructor

Make several clay whistles, depending upon the ability of the child and how complex the children want to make their whistles.  Whistles are molded from white clay pieces into various animal forms.  Children will choice the animal they like best!  Items will be glazed and/or colored then kiln fired for years of display and enjoyment!

Kidz Home Alone with Enriching Kidz

Program is designed for the child who will be home alone for short periods of time.  Children will learn such things as how to answer the phone, what to do in case of an emergency, safety around the home, etc. 

Wednesday:  10/19 – 11/9/16

Speed Running with Renee Eves, Parent

Running faster will force you to break out of your comfort zone, it’s important to do it safely.  Class will focus on learning four different workouts commonly used by professional runners to increase their speed.  Program is ideal for those that may want to try a kid’s fun run or 5K this spring.

French with Kari Glemaker, Mason Resident

This class is designed to introduce children to the very basics of the spoken language, culture and even food. We could be using products that could cause allergic reactions such as milk, wheat, eggs, etc.  For more details please contact Kim Dunnigan.

Jump Rope with Logan Goldberg, Comet Skippers Team Member

This program is for beginners to advanced students!  Learn from the Skippers from basic moves to more advanced moves.

The Experimental Science Challenge with MHS Science National Honor Society

Instructors will do experiments, then the students will figure out how they worked!  The experiments performed will cover first basics then slightly more complicated science concepts.   The program is very hands on for the enjoyment of MIS students.

Public Speaking with MHS Speech & Debate Team Members

Being able to communicate effectively is arguably the most important skill one can learn, yet public speaking is still one of the most prevalent fears.  To combat this, the MHS Speech and Debate Team have developed this course in which students will develop a speech and learn how to deliver it effectively. 

Thursday:  10/20 – 11/10/16

Better Baby Sitters (3:15-5:45) with Enriching Kidz

Students will learn:  First aid and safety; infant and child CPR (children will practice with mannequins); care of the choking child and infant; how to handle emergencies; creative problem solving; job professionalism; hands-on practice such as:  Diapering, bottle feeding and infant care.

Bricks 4 Kidz sponsored by Bricks 4 Kids of North Cincinnati

This is a hands-on class where students build machines, buildings, vehicles and other structures out of Lego components including bricks, gears, axles and motors.  Each week, we will learn about a STEM concept and then build a model illustrating that concept.  Custom mini-figure included.  This session’s theme is Amazing Animals!  Celebrate the wonders of the animal kingdom with a different motorized animal model each week.  Students will discuss fascinating facts about the animals as we build!

Computer Keyboarding with Christine Work, MIS Certified Teacher

The National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NET-S) outlines essential elements of technology education that allow students to live, learn, and work successfully in an increasingly complex and information-rich global society. Achieving keyboarding proficiency at an early age is necessary for the successful integration of technology across the curriculum. In this program, students will learn proper typing posture, Home Row finger placement, and accuracy of typing without looking at the keys (avoiding the 'hunt and peck' method). The ultimate goal would be to type 30 words per minute with 95% accuracy. We will use an online program that will allow the student to practice skills at school as well as at home.

Lazer Tag @ Lazer Kraze (Special times will be 3:00 – 5:15)

Students will spend time in the new trampoline area, then head to the Lazer Tag area.  A waiver for both the Lazer Kraze facility and MCS will need to be completed before you child will be permitted to attend this program, this will be sent to you along with your confirmation letter. Transportation provided to the facility, parents/guardians are responsible for picking up children at Lazer Kraze promptly @ 5:15.

Fencing with Ryan Howell, Professional Fencer

Students will learn the art and sport of fencing while having fun!  Lessons will include both foam swords and actual foils along with complete protective fencing gear for a safe and exciting class.  Join us for weekly themes, games, prizes and best of all lots and lots of fun!

Computer Programing/Scratch with Jurian Misawayee & Kunal Patil, MHS Students

Students will learn the basics of programming using Scratch, a kid friendly programming application.  With Scratch, you can program your own interactive stories, games and animations.  Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively.

Volleyball with Therese Wantach, Parent/Coach

Learn the volleyball basics of bumping, setting, spiking, serving and, most importantly, how volleyball can be so much fun with your friends.  All students’ beginners to advanced are welcome to par
