What is "Be a Beacon of Hope?"
First Lady of Aladdin Shrine Mandy Langhirt's project this year is one that is very near and dear to her heart. As the mother of four children, she has witnessed how one's smile can affect one's self-confidence. She has watched them bloom from shy, awkward children to beautiful, smiling teenagers and young adults because of orthodontic treatment. Because all of her children have required orthodontia, she has first-hand knowledge of the costs and benefits of braces. Now, she would like Aladdin to become a beacon of hope to patients at Shriners Children's Ohio who require similar treatment.
First Lady Mandy's project is raising money for orthodontic and dental treatments for patients at Shriners Children's Ohio in Dayton. Shriners Children's Ohio treats many children with cleft lip and palate. Every one of these patients will require orthodontic treatment, including braces and/or implants. These are very expensive services, with braces costing an average of $4,700, and implants costing around $30,000.
The need is great. Approximately 90 percent of Shriners' patients are either uninsured or underinsured. Shriners Children's Ohio covers these dental treatments as part of their comprehensive care model, spending about $150,000 annually on these procedures and appliances. These treatments are vital to the patient's confidence and self-image. Improving smiles and facial structures is one of the greatest gifts our facilities can provide for these children.
Together with the Nobility and Ladies of Aladdin Shrine, Lady Mandy is raising funds to offset these costs. Together we can be beacons of hope for the patients of our medical facility and provide them with smiles that can change their futures.
