Supporting Deaf Identity in Teenagers

Hearing differences can impact teenagers in many ways above and beyond audition and speech/language challenges, including acceptance and understanding of what it means to be “deaf.” This presentation will review the research on cultural identity development, and more specifically, deaf identity development in teenagers. Based on psychological research, specific strategies for how to support identity formation in teenage students will be discussed, including considerations for intersectionality of multiple identities. Case examples will also be reviewed.
