The Fort Hayes Arts and Academic High School Theatre Department proudly announces their Fall 2025 production of Godspell, the beloved rock musical surrounding the Gospel of St. Matthew, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) and a book by John-Michael Tebelak.
In this fresh, local retelling, Godspell’s story unfolds just blocks away from the students’ own communities in the heart of Columbus’ Short North Arts District. Inspired by the energy, diversity, and artistry of the Short North, Fort Hayes’ production transforms this timeless parable-driven musical into a vibrant, contemporary story rooted in the place students know best.
Featuring iconic songs like “Day by Day,” “Prepare Ye,” and “Light of the World,” Godspell invites audiences to laugh, sing, and reflect as a group of everyday people come together to build a community through compassion, storytelling, and joy.
“Godspell was the first musical I remember.” says the director, Tim Browning. “The beauty of this musical is that a messenger of love comes into the lives of these normal self-interested, very human, very flawed people and teaches them to accept one another and build a community… that’s my experience as an audience member. As an artist, I see opportunities to tell stories in so many different ways - improv, clowning, music, dance… There’s a place for everyone at this table - which also happens to be the theme of this masterpiece.”
