Supporting ESL & ELL (8:30-3:30 p.m.)

Supporting English Language Learners (ELLs): Strategies to Improve Literacy Skills and Content Area Instruction. Facilitated by Jessica Burchett, ESL Classroom Teacher at Harding High School.

The population of English Language Learners (ELLs) is growing across our state. Students are expected to not only learn English but also participate in all content areas. As an educator, are you meeting the needs of the ELL? If not, this session is a great place to start gaining a valuable insight on how to best serve this growing subgroup of students.

The morning will focus on strategies to help oral and written language and literacy development. The afternoon will center on content area instruction. Specific topics include:

  • Introduction of English Learners and Understanding Language Development: understanding language proficiency and cultural factors
  • Developing Oral and Written Literacy Skills
  • Accommodations and Modifications in the Content Areas
  • Instruction and Assessment for English Learners in the Content Areas: understanding how to use language objectives in content areas and differentiate the content

***Feel free to bring a lesson/unit to “fine-tune” or to gain ideas in creating with you.

Teachers and administrators, in particular, will benefit from this session.

Please plan to pack a snack/meal, as lunch will not be provided. Vending machines are available on-site for light snacks and beverages.
